This vehicle based on the hull of the Panther tank was made to equip the German military armored units with a protected recovery vehicle, able to tow the heavy tanks, damaged or blocked by mechanical faults during battle. However, it was advisable not to use it unless in an emergency, as the duration of the mechanical organs would have been very short, leaving the task, in ordinary cases, to two or three heavy half-tracked tractors. The Bergepanther was also equipped with an organ which favored a series of on-field repairs, therefore offering the skills of a real workshop vehicle. A limited number of this vehicle was produced, resorting to amending damaged vehicles.
