In the early 1980s, the US military developed a new family of vehicles based on the 365 hp 27.365 VFAE (8 x 8) chassis for troops stationed in Western Europe. The base models for this standardized common chassis are the M1001 Tractor and the M1002 Battlefield Recovery Vehicle. Later, the 10-ton flatbed trailer tractor M1014 and the M1013 with a crane were developed, which can tow the "Patriot" missile system and the "Pershing"-2 ballistic missile.
