The M53 155mm self-propelled howitzer is designed as a long-range fire support weapon for the mechanized army and has good cross-country capabilities. It entered service with the US Army and Marine Corps in 1952, and all guns were produced by Pacific Auto & Foundry. As a 155mm howitzer with the same chassis design as the M55, the M53 series and the M55 use a common standardized design. The gun was discontinued in 1956, but the US Marine Corps was using it in Vietnam until around 1969, but in some NATO organizations Countries, such as Belgium and Turkey, served longer.
