The Sd.Kfz.250 was constructed continuously from mid-1941 until the closing days of World War II, following successful pre-series tests. The production involved several manufacturers: Demag handled the chassis, Büssing-NAG produced the body and parts, with additional components sourced from MWC and Adlerwerke. In total, 6,628 units were built and modified for a diverse range of roles, similar to the widely used Hanomag. Although its size restricted some adaptations, the vehicle was notably more agile and maneuverable. It was distinctive among German half-tracks for having a fully enclosed hull rather than just a basic frame, enhancing its durability.

In October 1943, production processes were streamlined to increase efficiency, involving more suppliers and introducing several design simplifications. This updated version, termed "Neu Art" (new type), featured less complex bodywork with basic slits replacing vision blocks, straighter armored plates reduced to nine from nineteen, and fewer parts overall. The design also included permanent storage boxes mounted along the sides of the hull. These changes facilitated the creation of about a dozen specialized variants from the basic model.
